About St. Mary's Alpine Provincial Park

Located in the southern interior of British Columbia, St. Mary's Alpine Provincial Park spans a diverse range of alpine environments characterized by steep ridges, rocky peaks, and crystal-clear mountain lakes. The park protects one of the few relatively untouched alpine ecosystems in the region, featuring subalpine meadows, dense Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir forests, and snowfields that persist well into summer. This area supports wildlife such as mountain goats, marmots, and a variety of bird species including ptarmigan and Clark's nutcracker. The park was established in 1973 primarily to preserve its unique high-elevation terrain and to provide opportunities for remote wilderness experiences. Hiking is the primary recreation activity, with trails such as the St. Mary Lake Trail and circuits around high alpine basins offering spectacular views of the surrounding Monashee Mountains. Backcountry camping and fishing are also popular, with clear alpine lakes well-stocked with trout. The park is relatively undeveloped, which attracts visitors seeking solitude and the challenge of rugged terrain. Access is via forest service roads and requires a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle for some routes. Visitors are drawn by the park’s wild character, peaceful environment, and stunning vistas that reward exploration in all seasons. The park’s proximity to historic towns like Revelstoke adds cultural interest and logistical support for trips.
